    Existence cracks; Reality shifts
Her hand a husk as cold as mine.
I knelt in loss and rise reduced.
A ghost wired to a spine.

    As dawn climbs the horizon,
A beautiful reminder of her domain.
    The vampire seizes the shadows,
    His realm an open vein.

    Ascent both new and remembered,
    In summer's growth I thrive.
The offered chance of rebirth fulfilled
    Calm after chaos arrives.

A memory blooms in her thoughts,
    First delighted, then dismayed.
The scribe is gone from her senses,
    Path fulfilled; Path betrayed

    Descent both new and remembered,
The gaping pit makes its claim.
The winds of N'Kai are wailing,
    A greeting, a challenge - my name.

He slips to the black and forbidden,
Lost to her world and their dream.
    In darkness forgotten by dawn,
    His aspect a silent scream.

So that is the law of the branch, the path which cannot be denied.
And no matter the root shared between them, the split of the branch will divide.
As the winter is followed by springtime, so are each of us bound,
To the fork in the road and the shadows, where the other has never been found.

    Down, down; the Wyrmling's call,
To the black and frozen lake.
    Awaits Shar-Ti's offering to treat,
    The thirst I cannot slake.

Ice to hold and iron to cut,
The shaman's tools for her deeds.
And down below the great worm slumber,
    As the vampire bleeds.

    Down, down; from memory's lure
    To the abandoned, oaken halls
    No crimson trace or presence,
    To hear my echoed calls

    The iron chill of emptiness,
A bond once strong now lost.
Her thread was cut and torn from him,
    No gift without a cost.

    Lucid; I blacked out again,
Dying shackled in slick black ice.
Shar-Ti meets my gaze and says,
    "Accept my sacrifice"

The dreaming Dhole twists in its pit,
Shatters the ice in thunderous quakes.
A life is given as the scribe's turned loose,
    And his raging fever breaks.

    Empty; his haunts forsaken,
But for the traces left by me.
Like bleached wood on a stormy ocean
Adrift and rootless, I am free.

The beating rain that drowns her tears,
Drives her shattered to her knees,
It's drumming pattern on the leaves: a call,
For the solace of the trees.

    Relief at first, in freedom,
Blood and rage wash off in the rain,
    But it's drumming pattern calls to me;
The name that's kept me sane.

He finds no whisper in the heartwood,
Her scent so faint that he flees,
    Fearing - knowing - that she'd seek,
    The solace of the trees.

The shiver of sap in springtime,
    From thaw to summer's heat.
The tickle of leaves in autumn,
    Each echo the cycle's repeat.

A single blink marks each season,
A dream as timeless as the sun.
Lost from self or thought or will
    Her deep hibernation's begun.

    In this endless, frozen moment,
We're worlds apart as we meet.
Her arms cast wide to the heavens,
Roots shooting out of her feet.

    The vampire bares his fangs,
For the dryad is beyond any scream.
But he can't drain or pierce,
The sap that carries her dream.

    Fingertips tall to the heavens,
Peace and rightness cradles her mind.
Toes stretched down towards the bedrock,
Dreams of sunlight and earth intertwined.

In the midst of dormant slumber,
a sharpened touch disturbs my sleep.
Like stone splashing into the ocean,
Its ripple is lost to the deep.

Sitting beside her, awaiting the sun
    Bleeding, my wrists quietly weep.
    She'll be an ash, and I dust at her feet;
Together at last, forever we'll sleep.

And then her fingers curl from the skies
An intake of breath turned to screams,
As his vampiric blood drenches her roots
    It shatters her wandering dreams.

Bare knees meet the crimson offer,
In precious liquid I am blessed,
Copper curls meet the paleness of fingers,
The brush of my nose at his chest.

    Neck yielded in urgent offer,
His first taste outshines the sun.
    Once more their arms intermingle,
Fated; these two who are one.

So that is the law of the heart, the beat that cannot be denied.
And no matter scars between them, the rhythm will rise and subside.
As spring is followed by summer, so are each of us found,
Tracing the steps in the dance, like moths to a flame are we bound.

This concludes our piece, The Law of Blood and Branch! When we began in 2008 we had no idea it would take us a dozen years to get through the three arcs of the piece that we'd envisioned - The Law of Blood, The Law of Branch and the Law of Heart. We are very excited to finally follow through and complete it.

For anyone who is still reading, thank you for your interest and time, and we hope you've enjoyed it over the years. A particular thank you to Cordir for always encouraging and inspiring writing and storytelling, and to Tynian for his relentless dedication in keeping the server running throughout the years.

    All the best to everyone,

    Cirth, Corri and their players
